ALS Therapy Development Institute The 2130

About The 2130

To commemorate the great Lou Gehrig, and take a stand against the disease that continues to take the lives of 5,000 Americans each year, cyclists from around the country will take to the streets of their communities and ride.

Competing to see who can raise more money and more awareness for ALS, Teams score points based on the distance of the ride, how many people ride, and how much money the group raises. Individual and Team prizes are awarded for top fundraising, distance, number of riders, and overall point leaders. Prizes are also awarded to all Teams scoring over 2130 points.

A 2130 can take place any day from April 1 - June 30th. The distance, course and type of event is up to the ride organizer. Think you, your friends and family, your community, or your cycling club has what it takes to win? Register below and let's see what you can do!

How to Participate

You can either start your own 2130, or join an existing ride. Our fully interactive website provides organizers and participants with team webpages, online registration, online fundraising, and a real-time rollup of donors.

Use our online tools to build and promote your ride. Print flyers, send media releases, Tweet it, Facebook it, and generally spread the word. Ride and encourage your friends and family to donate, volunteer or ride with you.

Have a great day out, and remember it's about ending ALS.

About ALS and ALS TDI

ALS, LOU GEHRIG'S DISEASE
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disorder. Attacking motor neurons in the spinal cord, it disables the brain's ability to communicate with the body. Muscles, unable to receive messages from the brain, shut down and a person loses all voluntary motor functions along with the ability to walk, talk, eat and eventually breathe.

Disease onset continues to perplex scientists and researchers. An estimated 10% of ALS cases are "familial" (hereditary) and the remaining 90% are "sporadic". What the medical community does know is that the disease can hit anyone at anytime.

Striking adults between 18 and 80, about 7,000 US families are hit with an ALS diagnosis each year - the incidence is similar to Multiple Sclerosis. However, the lack of an effective therapy combined with the aggressive and rapid progression of the disease means there are only about 30,000 US citizens with ALS at any given time - a person will typically survive only two-to-five years past diagnosis.

ALS THERAPY DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE
The 2130 is produced by the ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI) the world's first 501(c)(3) non-profit biotech.

Founded in 1999, ALS TDI is driven by a single goal - to discover an effective therapy for ALS as quickly as possible, and ultimately to end this disease. A real 'brick & mortar' organization, the team of full-time research scientists and technicians work together each day in a state-of-the-art laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Taking the disease apart at the molecular level and turning off genes and proteins which may be related to the disease, the Institute is solely focused on stopping ALS.

Stop by anytime! We're located in the heart of the Cambridge Biotech community, and love to show-off our facility. Or, visit us online at www.ALS.net
